A native of Hong Kong, bass-baritone Bernard Lee received his training in voice, music theory and choral conducting at The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He appeared in The Mikado and Dido and Aneas with the Conservatory's Light Opera Club. While still a student at the Conservatory, Bernard was invited to join the world-renowned Choir of the Church of the Advent in Beacon Hill, Boston, as a professional chorister for four consecutive years. He has performed extensively in the United States with the Peabody Singers form the Johns Hopkins University and Early Music groups such as Scholar Cantorum of Boston and the Cantata Singers. Bernard also studied choral conducting with Simon Carrington, the founding member of the King's Singers, F. John Adams and Tamara Brooks, and music theory with Deborah Stein, Eileen Soskin and Daniel Pinkham. Bernard coached and taught music theory and ear-training the entire time he was at The New England Conservatory.
A specialist in Renaissance sacred music, Bernard has conducted and performed all of the six Bach's motets and numerous masses by a representative list of Renaissance composers.
In Hong Kong, Bernard has appeared with the Hong Kong Singers several times since his return to Hong Kong last year, playing Perchik in this season's production of Fiddler on the Roof. He has just recently directed the chorus for the Singer's production of Oklahoma!. He is also currently a member of a local all-male a cappella group, The Typhoons, specializing in repertoire ranging from the Classical period to barbershop quartets. Bernard also sings with Hong Kong Voices as a soloist and chorister in several Bach's Cantatas.
