Purpose & Goals:
Audience development through increased knowledge and analytical listening and viewing skills in the appreciation of the art of Western opera

Content & Activities:
This course is an survey of the main currents of European opera from its beginnings to the present. Opera has been a vehicle for ideas and social change throughout European history; it is total theatre, presenting events not only in terms of ideas, but also emotions.

We will be following the development of opera through its stories, musical structures, stage design and performance practice. As background we will consider innovation and fashion, social and cultural contexts, and the relation of opera to other arts.

Representative works will be explored in audio and video recordings and printed texts. Students are expected to become familiar with different styles and forms of opera.

The course is divided in three parts according to the trimesters of the academic year.

Prerequisites:
This course will benefit all students who have an interest in exploring this significant part of western culture. There is no pre-requisite for the course, and no prior knowledge of music or languages is needed.

Attendance minimum required 75%
