One of Asia's leading vocal teachers for the past 10 years, the bass Dr. Anthony has sung 60 roles on stage and performed with several internationally known singers, including Giacomo Aragall, Maria Ewing, Helga Dernesch, Gino Quilico, Enzo Dara, and Dame Josephine Barstow. He has become well known in Hong Kong as the leading bass in most of the opera productions in Hong Kong since 1993. Taught by the Metropolitan Opera bass Otto Edelmann, Anthony graduated from the world famous Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna in 1983 with distinction in opera performance." Already before graduating, he won a contract as a full-time opera singer in Germany where he performed for several years.
After further studies under yet another internationally renowned teacher and singer, the French baritone Martial Singher, Derek Anthony continued to perform in many operas, concerts, recitals, and radio broadcasts. Between 1988 and 1991 he won the first prize in five vocal competitions (including the Regional Metropolitan Opera Auditions and the Grand Prize in the Carmel Young Artist's Competition) and became a finalist in Concurso Internacional de Canto in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1989.
In 2000, under the leadership of Dr. Anthony, The Music and Drama Institute was founded to promote higher standards of vocal artistry and teaching in the Asia Pacific region. Previously he served as Director and Professor of Vocal Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, as Teaching Associate of the Peabody Conservatory, and as stage director for the Michigan Opera Theatre and the University of California in Santa Barbara. In 1993, he became Senior Lecturer at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and trained the majority of the school's vocal students. Since that time, students from Dr. Anthony's studio have regularly been selected for advanced training at world famous music schools, and have won international vocal competitions and scholarships. In addition, he continues to train students in singing, speaking and acting for the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, numbering 52 winners to date.
He is a full member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (U.S.A.), and the College Music Society, and holds a Master's Degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Dr. Anthony has frequently appeared both as a performer and teacher on radio in USA and Hong Kong), and on television [CNBC (on "Money! Money! Money!"), JADE (on 'HK Cultural Plaza'), RTHK, China National TV, and Canadian Television (with Sir Peter Ustinov)].
