VISITING ARTIST-TEACHER BIOGRAPHY

Ernest Hin-Leung So, a native of Hong Kong, made his solo debut at the age of 8. During his formative years, he came under the tutelage of Yi-Ming Pan, professor from the Beijing Central Conservatory. He was later admitted into Manhattan School of Music in New York at the age of 17, and a few months later, into the Juilliard School. Major teachers include Solomon Mikowsky, the renowned Beethoven scholar Jacob Lateiner, the late Samuel Sanders, as well as Jonathan Feldman, pianist for New York Philharmonic. Composition teachers include Lawrence Widdoes and Samuel Zyman.

In 1995, Mr. So won the Best Performer Award in Singapore along with the Beethoven Award and trophy. He had since performed regularly in solo performances as well as concerts for charitable organizations such as the Red Cross. His solo engagements had spanned over 3 continents including United States, England, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. His chamber music concerts specialize in violin and piano duos with repertoire from the great sonatas of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Faure, Ravel, and Elgar.

As a young scholar, Mr. So had devoted his work chiefly in the life and music of Beethoven. Aside from regular presentations of his insightful analysis, his most notable lectures include 'Beethoven and his economics', 'Beethoven's pianos', 'Portrait of a self-dependent composer', as well as other in-depth studies into editorial practices and history.

In 2000, Mr. So founded the Atelier des Artistes in New York, whose aim is to provide a comprehensive music education at a professional level. The studio also serves as a platform for numerous performances, lectures, as well as active outreach programs in New York City. Mr. So now continues his performances, dividing his time between teaching and research.
