FAQS
ABOUT LEARNING MUSIC

Why should a beginner start with a highly qualified teacher?

There are several good reasons, such as the opportunity to develop a safe and reliable technique from the beginning (saves time, money, and frustration), and to benefit from an experienced teacher's vision in guiding the development of a student's potential, for example in selecting appropriate repertoire and performance situations.

Am I too old to study music?

The main limitation may be a certain lack of senso-motoric flexibility. A more mature and analytical approach than in a child's mode of learning, coupled with life experience can actually be an advantage, in terms of motivation, self-discipline, and sensitivity to musical expression.

Is my child too young to study music?

Depending on the type of instrument, children as young as 4 or 5 can learn some of the foundations of music and technique. The main issue for children is usually the degree of self-motivation and the ability to concentrate.

What if I have no talent for music studies?

People may assume this because of lack of much previous musical experience in the past. Both the voice and instruments can be trained to some degree. Remember: competence builds confidence.

You are probably not really tone deaf, but lack experience in listening attentively to music for its own sake.

What if I have no time to practice?

Then expect to progress slowly.

How long should music lessons be?

On average one hour for individual sessions with adults.

How frequently does one need to take music lessons?

One to three times per week depending on one's performance goals, and the amount of time you can practice productively between lessons.

How long does it take to learn to perform?

For a beginner, it depends on the development of technical skill and musical ability. When the teacher and student feel that the performance is most likely to be a positive learning experience for the student, it is time to start gaining performance experience.
