VISITING ARTIST-TEACHER BIOGRAPHY

Ionel Pantea is a Romanian bass baritone, Ionel Pantea is one of the most distinguished singers of his generation. He studied bel canto singing in Cluj, Romania, with his teachers Stella Simonetti, Albert D'Andre and Anna Rozsa. He perfected his artistry in lieder singing working in Vienna with Erik Werba and Alexander Kolo.

He won first prize at numerous international competitions - Vinas and Canals in Barcelona, the Munich ACD, the Geneva Competition and the Zwickau Schumann singing competition. Almost immediately, he found himself performing at the world's finest opera houses and festivals (Salzburg, Vienna, Bregenz, Bucharest, Budapest, Sao Paolo, Wroclaw) with the best orchestras. Conductors he has worked with include Gardelli, Santi, Swarowkski, Kubelik, Ferencsik , Rostropovich and Bergel.

Until 1985, he was the head of department of the opera faculty of the Cluj Music Academy. In that year, he founded the opera faculty at the Luxemburg Conservatoire. His pupils (Alexander Agache, M. Zamfir, Tamas Daroczi, Attila. B. Kiss) enjoyed immense success on the international stage.

He has held masterclasses in Prague, Krakow, Majk, Bucharest and Cluj among others. He is a member of the "I Vocalisti" quartet along with Ileana Cotrubas, Julia Hamari and Peter Schreier. He is an honorary citizen of Bucharest, and has been awarded the Luxemburg and Romanian Order of the Maltese Cross. In September 2001, he performed at the Bucharest Enesco Festival and in 2002, appeared at the Edinburgh Festival.
