A native of Hong Kong, Chui-Tan Lee has concertized and worked with internationally renowned artists. Chui-Tan began her studies with Chan Shong-On in Hong Kong. From that point on, she has been under the tutelage of such masters as Lin Yao-chi of the Beijing central Conservatory, Shirley Givens of New York's Juilliard School, the Russian virtuoso Albert Markov of New York's Manhattan School, and the Hungarian pedagogue Lorand Fenyves at the University of Toronto.
Ms. Lee's career has taken her to three continents, performing at numerous venues. Engagements have included Lincoln Center in New York City, the Aspen Music Festival, Cornell University, France's Fontainebleau Music Festival, L'Orford Centre d'Art in Quebec, the Sarasota Music Festival of Florida, Hong Kong city Hall, and the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, where she was resident scholar during the Fall of 1994.
Over the Christmas of 1993, Ms Lee was one of a handful of exceptionally gifted musicians selected from around the world to join the International Symphony Orchestra of Jerusalem, Israel. Other artists of distinction Ms. Lee has worked with included Pinchas Zuckerman, Josef Silverstein, Witold Lutoslawski, Robert Levin, the Juilliard Quartet, and the Cleveland Quartet.
In the Spring of 1994, Ms Lee made her first Southeast Asian tour with a series of concerts in Malaysia. Her performances "displayed an interpretative vigour that bespoke her assured grasp of the repertoir... Her knowledge of [the music] verged on the intuitive, and it was evident in her effortless handling of them," said the New Straits Times.
Despite having played in many countries, Ms. Lee holds as most special her tour of Hong Kong and China during the summer fo 1988, as part of the family ensemble, the Intanyee Trio. In addition to performing at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre, Ms. Lee also returned to her ancestral province of Fujian, giving a special concert on Xiamen Gulangyu Island.
Ms Lee received her Master of Music Degree from the University of Toronto in the Fall of 1994. Among the prizes and scholarships she has won are Lado, Inc. Scholarship in New York, the Kate Bamberger Scholarship, and Leon Tec Award, and numerous scholarships from University of Toronto.
She became a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic in 1996, and left in 1999 to focus on teaching. Ms Lee is a founding member of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, and has appeared in radio and television in Asia, including CNN, TVB, ATV, and RTHK. She is an avid teacher, and often organizes student performances in nursing home and hospitals in the territory.
