VISITING ARTIST-TEACHER BIOGRAPHY

May Lam is a bilingual, born and raised in Hong Kong. She had shown an interest in Music at a young age and determined to be a musician. In order to fulfil her wish her parent sent her to North Wales in 1996 when she was 16 to Howell's School - a school with a good music reputation. Her main interests were Music History, Vocal Practice and the Art of Piano Performance. During the fours years in Howell's May participated in numerous music activities such as Choir singing, as a piano accompanist for the Junior School Choir, performing on the piano for school concerts.

At the end of her fours years education in Howell's May received the Senior Music Prize and the Mary Brierley Music Scholarship from the Drapers' Company London in 2000 supporting her next three years Bachelor Degree in Music in Goldsmith's College University of London. Her main study areas during her Bachelor Degree were Music History, The Language of Tonal Music, Performance, Aesthetic, Studio Composition, Serialism and particularly interested in Contemporary Music Composition.

After her Bachelor Degree May continued her studies with a Master Degree in Contemporary Music Composition in 2003 at the same University under the guidance of Roger Redgate, the pioneer of atonal music composition, and Dimitri Smirnov for the art of orchestration. In 2003-2004 May produced a number of works and were performed successfully in the Composer's Forum organised by her University.

May is now a free-lance composer in Hong Kong composing both tonal and atonal music. Her main interests are to promote contemporary music education in Hong Kong and to compose for movies. She also teaches history of music, piano performance and music appreciation.
