| Martial Singher:
An Interpretative Guide to Operatic Arias.
A Handbook for Singers, Coaches, Teachers, and Students
About the Book
A standard work in most American universities for the past 15 years, this valuable book gives a rare insight into the thought processes of the professional performing artist through a very detailed account of text, interpretation, and technical advice for the singer. The line-by-line translations are excellent.
About the Author Martial Singer was born in France in 1904. At the age of 26 he became a soloist of the Paris Opera and performed many leading baritone roles there.
In 1934 he premiered the song-cycle 'Don Quichotte a Dulcine' which Maurice Ravel dedicated to him.
After a dramatic escape from Nazi-occupied France during World War II, he arrived in New York and became one of the leading artists of The Metropolitan Opera in 1940ies and 50ies. Following his retirement from the operatic stage after a 30 year career, he embarked on another 30 year career as a teacher of many of the worlds top vocal artists, including King, Quilico, Blegen, Altmeyer, Reardon, Gramm, etc. All in all, 14 of his students were to become singers at the Metropolitan Opera, and hundreds of other pursued worthwhile careers in America, Europe, and Asia.
MDI Recommendation
We recommend this book not only for it's exceptional quality, but also based of the first hand experience of the author and the extraordinary results of his work and ideas.
