| VISITING ARTIST-TEACHER - BIOGRAPHY |
US-born bassist Peter Scherr has lived in Hong Kong since 1989. Since leaving the Hong Kong Philharmonic in 1996, he has been increasingly active musically, playing with the finest international musicians and pursuing wide-ranging interests in composition and improvisation. He performs many times each year in Hong Kong and abroad and is also active as a teacher of bass and improvisation.
This year has been a busy one for Mr. Scherr, with several projects in progress. So far, 4 complete cycles of the "Dual Mono" series have been completed and many additional cycles are planned. The Dual Mono process is an original concept, which deals with issues of multiple information streams, repetition, and possibilities of perception in a complex soundscape.
The Joe Rosenberg Quartet East, of which Mr. Scherr is a member, completed a recording of Mr. Rosenberg's compositions and concepts in June, and the same group has just recorded a set of Aksan Sjuman's music in October.
Mr. Scherr has expanded his series of programs of new and unusual improvised music in Hong Kong and has hopes of bringing more and more interesting music to Hong Kong in the future. He says: "Though recording is very important to me, live playing is at the center of what I do. In performance there exists a unique opportunity to create new musical worlds that include both the musicians and audience".
